Overview:

Celanese seeks a Specialist, Innovation & Science Process Technology at their Kingston, ON polymerization hub within Technology & Innovation (T&I) in the Celanese Engineered Polymers Division. Our local organization is 30 employees strong while supporting Celanese globally. Kingston is called the Limestone City, located right on Lake Ontario with a population of 140-150,000 located within a 2-3 hour drive to Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. The polymerization organization in Kingston has been here for over 80 years.

 

The Specialist, Innovation & Science Process Technology will design, develop, implement and oversee the Kingston, Auburn Hills and Troy site’s environmental, stewardship (health, safety and environmental) programs and procedures to safeguard employees and surrounding communities and to ensure that all facilities are compliant with regulations.

 

Travel Expectations:

  • Required to travel to Auburn Hills and Troy Sites (by car/train) 10-25% or as required due to work requirements.
  • Must have and keep active an Canadian Passport and have no issues for travel internationally.

Responsibilities:

EHS Leadership & Program Management

  • Strategic Program Leadership: Lead the site EHS programs, ensuring alignment and integration with the Corporate Stewardship (EHS) Integration Plan.
  • Incident Management & Risk Mitigation: Lead risk-based incident investigations, conduct root cause failure analysis (RCFA), classify incidents, and manage the corrective action database system.
  • Process Safety Management (PSM): Serve as the site PSM Leader, including managing PHA sign-offs for EHS.
  • Regulatory Expertise: Provide expert consultation and interpretation of RAGAGEP (Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices), federal, state, provincial, and local EHS regulations (including OSHA/OHSA) and building codes.
  • Chemical Management: Oversee and enforce all procedures for chemical storage, handling, disposal, and utilize the ChIP chemical tracking system.
  • Core Safety Programs: Lead and manage key site safety programs, including confined space, lock-out/tag-out, fall protection, line break, PPE, hearing conservation, indoor air quality, thermal stress, ergonomics, and machine guarding.
  • Auditing & Compliance: Lead and coordinate 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party EHS audits, ensuring ongoing ISO 14001 compliance for the Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Committee Leadership: Lead the site Joint Health and Safety Committee (Kingston), and act as the Stewardship representative for all site committees.

 

Environmental Stewardship

  • Compliance & Reporting: Enforce and report on site measures for Air Quality, External Noise, Water Management, and Hazardous Waste, ensuring compliance with all provincial and federal acts, regulations, and reporting (including corporate CEP and provincial certificates of approval).
  • Permitting & Approvals: Complete all renewal applications for Air and Water Certificates of Approval to maintain operational flexibility.
  • EMR and ISO 14001: Act as the Environmental Management Resource (EMR) and core process owner for EMS compliance, managing training, modification screening, ISO registers, and annual control plans.
  • Environmental Technology: Introduce new environmental technologies to reduce and prevent atmospheric contaminants and support environmental emergency response initiatives.

 

Safety Culture & Continuous Improvement

  • Culture Development: Champion a proactive safety culture across all levels of the organization by developing monthly safety meeting content and introducing new safety technologies and corporate programs.
  • Training & Engagement: Leverage a "learn-teach-learn" philosophy to empower others, leading and conducting emergency drills, and developing effective hazard communication.
  • Consultation & Support: Provide technical EHS consultation for the T&I labs as needed, serving as a key liaison with Stewardship leaders at other America's sites (Florence, KY and Chestnut Run, DE).

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Secondary school graduation diploma with the successful completion of related courses in mathematics & sciences at minimum grade twelve level
  • 5+ years in industrial safety and environmental experience in Canada and/or US

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental, chemical engineering, technology or related
  • Certifications/Training (Highly Valued):
  • Industrial Hygiene Course
  • Certified Joint Health & Safety Representative
  • Process Safety Management (PSM) Training
  • Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) Training
  • ISO 14001 or other quality program auditor training/experience
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG/DOT) training
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification
  • Certified Respiratory Administrator and Fit Tester
  • Industrial construction experience and contractor management
